Director statement :

“Through the deep west” was produced in São Paulo’s countryside, with young non-actors, and its screenplay was developed based on real stories of a group of young men from a neighborhood in the margin of a small city called Assis.
The movie follows Luquinha and friends who are trying to rescue a lost horse, and in this way it tries to builds a social portrait of contemporary Brazil, in a naturalist way at first, that evolves into a more magical realist western in order to represent the contradictions of the youth in the outskirst of Assis — a once rural place that has how expelled once rural workers to the outskirts of small towns.
Assis was also one of Brazilian cities with most voters for Bolsonaro, currently still having many supporters of the far right president. This support is often translated by parades of pick up trucks with Brazilian flags, owned by land lords that have their main income out of sugar cane and other kind of plantations. It was a low budget movie from a project called Polo Audiovisual do Velho Oeste (audiovisual hub from the old west), which acts by the promotion of inlands productions of Brazil, searching for new narratives, decentralized and outskirted, and it was produced by the Oeste Cooperativa Audiovisual, Project Manager.
